ASSESSMENT
I have worked extensively in student assessment, with a focus on developing innovative skills-based assessment reporting systems for studio arts and art history. My experience includes participating in assessment-focused professional development over several years, developing and refining my school’s system, and supporting teachers through training and coaching.
Areas of expertise:
- Competency Based Learning (aka Standards Based Grading, Proficiency Based Learning), an assessment and reporting system in which course skills are identified and assessed individually. Unlike traditional aggregated score reporting, a student’s competency with each skill is reported separately for each project, and cumulatively on the student/family-facing digital platform. This style of assessment and score reporting facilitates students and families to better understand areas for growth (and strengths), and so to more effectively target efforts for academic progress.
- Interdisciplinary/Transferrable Skills Assessment. No curriculum exists in a disciplinary vacuum, and it’s important we highlight points of connection for students, across traditional subject areas.
- Project Assessment. Assessments should produce a transparent snapshot of a student’s progress within a course, but should also be engaged with as a meaningful part of the project’s process. My assessments are multi-modal, with components that are reflective, public-facing, student-driven, collaborative, and skills-based.
